Life Jackets: Your Essential Companion on the River

As the summer sun warms the waters of the Pigeon River, it’s the perfect time to embark on a canoe or kayak adventure! At Trading Post Outfitters, we’ve been helping people make memories outdoors since 1971. While the river offers plenty of peace, beauty and relaxation, safety should always come first to ensure every trip is as enjoyable as it is unforgettable.

Why Life Jackets Matter

Our business, along with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), emphasizes the life-saving importance of wearing a personal flotation device (PFD). Even strong swimmers can run into unexpected currents or obstacles on the water, no matter the class or typical conditions of the river. According to the DNR, most water-related fatalities could have been prevented with proper life jacket use.

Safety Tips for Your River Adventure

To keep your river trip smooth and safe, follow these simple guidelines:

  • Always Wear a Life Jacket
Regardless of your swimming ability, a properly fitted life jacket is essential.

  • Stay Informed
Check weather and river conditions before heading out—especially if you’re using your own personal boats and not paddling with an outfitter who will be expecting your return.

  • Avoid Alcohol
While alcohol isn’t prohibited on the Pigeon River, we strongly encourage paddlers to enjoy responsibly. Impairment can quickly turn a fun float into a very dangerous situation.

  • Supervise Children
Keep a close eye on kids at all times, no matter their age or swimming experience. Life jackets should be worn securely at all times on the water, especially by youth.

  • Stick to Designated Areas
Avoid restricted or unfamiliar parts of the river. Outdoor adventures are safer and much more fun when you’re not lost or stuck!

Our Commitment to Your Safety

At Trading Post Outfitters, your safety is always our top priority. Every rental includes a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, and our team is happy to help ensure you’ve got the right fit. If you’re bringing your own boats and gear, we require that any life jackets used along with our shuttle service be Coast Guard-approved. If you’re accessing the river without outfitter services, you’re responsible for your own PFD—but keep in mind, Indiana law requires that each paddler have a life jacket in their vessel at all times.
